Open position for a Radiation Safety Specialist at University of Georgia’s Savannah River Ecology Laboratory

The Savannah River Ecology Laboratory (SREL) seeks qualified applicants for the position of Radiation Safety Specialist. This is a full-time, benefits eligible position reporting to the Director of SREL. This position is intended to serve as the SREL Radiation Safety Officer in support of the regulatory, training, and reporting activities involving sampling, transport and analysis of environmental and biological samples and sealed sources at SREL.

Overview: This position will be responsible for ensuring that all SREL research programs involving radiological materials are conducted in a safe and secure manner in compliance with all applicable local, state and federal regulations. This position will serve as the SREL liaison with the Savannah River Site Radiological Control Program to ensure that all appropriate permitting, oversight, and coordination activities are in place before radiological research is conducted. This position will serve as the subject matter expert for development of all Project Safety Appraisal and Radiation Work Permits needed to conduct research involving radiological samples at SREL.

Qualifications: Graduation from an accredited college or university with major course work in health physics, environmental science or related fields, and three years of experience that are directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified are required. A M.S. Degree and at least three years of experience that are directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified are preferred. Knowledge, skills and abilities expected include: Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports; Ability to communicate technical information to non-technical personnel; Ability to document work in progress; Ability to work effectively with diverse populations; Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations; Records maintenance skills; Knowledge of federal, state and local safety regulations, protocols, and/or procedures; Knowledge of radiation safety procedures, standards, and protocols; Ability to develop, implement, and enforce safety programs and protocols; Skill in developing and conducting employee information/orientation sessions; Skill in developing safety procedures and protocols; Skill in performing safety inspections ensuring compliance with all applicable safety standards.

Responsibilities: This is a highly responsible safety position at SREL. This position advises and provides guidance to research personnel concerning policies and the safe handling of hazardous materials; Reviews and approves all Project Safety Appraisal Forms and Radiation Work Permits generated by SREL personnel for research involving isotopes and serves as a subject matter expert for SREL researchers to develop such documents; Provides and schedules training on policies, procedures and protocols for handling of radioactive samples to all SREL employees conducting research involving radiological materials and schedules Radiological Worker training for SREL employees as needed; Maintains safeguards and security protocols and access permissions for all SREL laboratories which house radiological materials; Manages SREL dosimetry program interface with the Radiological Control Program of the Savannah River Site; Leads SREL interface with Radiological Control Program on the Savannah River Site; Generates, reviews and updates all SREL policies and procedures related to the purchasing, storage, handling, use and disposal of radiological materials and conducts regular inspections of laboratories and other facilities at SREL that are used for research on radiological materials; Coordinates with the Savannah River Site Waste Management Program for disposal of all radioactive waste and waste related items; Maintains SREL radiological material and radiological sealed source inventories; Maintains QA/QC and provides training for researchers on use of all radiological monitoring equipment housed at SREL; Disseminates compliance information to biological hazardous materials users; Coordinates with Environmental Safety Manager to ensure consistency in policies and procedures between chemical and radiological safety programs at SREL and provides regular updates to SREL management on the status, needs, and issues related to research involving radiological materials at SREL.

Savannah River Ecology Laboratory: The successful candidate will be located at the Savannah River Ecology Laboratory, a research unit of the University of Georgia located on the 300 mi2 Savannah River Site, a Department of Energy facility near Aiken, SC (http://srel.uga.edu). With a staff of over 100 faculty, postdocs, research professionals, technicians, and graduate students, the laboratory pursues basic and applied research at multiple levels of ecological organization. SREL also provides opportunities for graduate and undergraduate research training, and service to the community through environmental outreach. Throughout its 60+ year history SREL has strived to acquire and communicate knowledge that contributes to sound ecological stewardship.
