Job opening: full-time, project professor/associate Professor specializing in marine radionuclide dynamics - IER, Fukushima University
2018-12-20 -

[ Deadline for application: Thursday, January 31, 2019 ]

The Institute of Environmental Radioactivity (IER), Fukushima University, invites applications fixed-term, full-time project professor or project associate professor.

1. Outline

The Institute of Environmental Radioactivity (IER) was established on July 1, 2013, as an open hub for advanced research on the behavior of environmental radioactivity in Fukushima Prefecture. IER is run under joint administration by Fukushima University and other partner universities/research institutions from around the world which possess experience and expertise in this field.

Our mission is to support the revitalization of Fukushima Prefecture from an academic perspective by scientifically clarifying the behavior and long-term effects of radioactivity on the environment resulting from the Tokyo Electric Power Company’s Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station accident.

IER also aims to function as a base for research located in Fukushima and is actively accepting and supporting scientists from Japan and overseas wishing to conduct research in Fukushima while promoting advanced joint research.

IER is inviting applications for the position of fixed-term, full-time project professor or project associate professor. Successful applicants will be required to:

  • possess extensive international research experience,
  • be capable of supervising research,
  • assume roles and responsibilities for a variety of activities associated with the IER while pursuing his/her own leading-edge research,
  • demonstrate a passion for the field of education, as Fukushima University is preparing to set up a major in environmental radioactivity science (master’s degree program) in the Graduate School of Symbiotic Systems Science and Technology from academic year 2019-2020

For details on the type of projects being initiated at the IER, please refer to our website (http://www.ier.fukushima-u.ac.jp/index_e.html) or contact us at the email address provided in section 9 below.

2. Job Description, Research Field and Number of Positions Available

(1) Project professor or project associate professor
(2) Marine Radionuclide Dynamics (Radioisotope Geoscience Division)
Natural and anthropogenic radionuclides derived from nuclear accidents or nuclear facilities migrate from land to ocean and within the ocean. Research on marine radionuclide migration is an extremely important field of study in order to understand their impact on the environment and the human population via the food chain. The effect of radiation/radioactivity in the marine environment has been a hot research topic internationally and researchers continue to show keen interest in Fukushima.
Based on the above, we invite applicants who are not just capable of conducting world’s leading research but also capable of contributing to the local community. In addition, the position is responsible for educating all-levels of students, not just graduate students in the Environmental Radioactivity Science major, and will be involved in various projects/programs of Fukushima University.
